Robert Smithson (1938–73) Passaic, New Jersey doğumlu Amerikalı bir sanatçı ve arazi sanatının kurucularından biridir. Sanat kariyerine resimle başlamasına rağmen Smithson 1964’te heykel yapmaya başladı ve minimalist, geometrik işler üretti. Çalışmaları genellikle ya uzak yerlerden toplanmış ve galeri mekânına getirilmiş toprak, kum ve kaya gibi öğelerden oluşuyordu ya da mekâna özgü olup geleneksel sanat alanlarının dışında konumlanıyordu. Smithson’ın en bilinen yapıtı Sarmal Dalgakıran da 1970’te Utah eyaletindeki Büyük Tuz Gölü’nün kuzey kıyısında yapıldı. 6.650 ton kadar toprak ve etrafında tuz kristallerinden meydana gelen bu devasa sarmal kimi zaman bütünüyle sualtında kalır. Aynı isme sahip bu film, Smithson’ın düşünüşüne, sarmal dalgakıran fikri ve geometrik bir forma karşı kuvvetli ilgisine bir bakış sunuyor.

Robert Smithson (1938–73) was an American artist born in Passaic, New Jersey and one of the founders of land art. Although he started out with painting, Smithson later took up sculpture to produce minimalist and geometric works. His works usually either incorporated elements such as dirt, sand, and rocks gathered from distant places and transported to the gallery space, or they were site-specific, installed outside of traditional art venues. Such was Smithson’s best-known work, the Spiral Jetty, created in 1970 in the northern shore of Utah’s Great Salt Lake. The gigantic spiral of some 6,650 tons of earth – with salt crystals all around – is at times entirely submerged in the water. The eponymous art film on display gives a glimpse into Smithson’s thinking, and his fascination with the idea of a spiral jetty and a geometric form.
