Kitaplar ve pleksiglas paneller
1964 Lübnan doğumlu Rechmaoui, Beyrut’ta yaşıyor ve çalışıyor. Onun heykel çalışmaları, kentleşme ve güncel toplumsal ve davranışsal demografi gibi temaları yansıtır. İstanbul Modern’de iki projesi sergileniyor: İlki bir dizi yeni bina heykeli, diğeri ise plastik cam levhalarla çoğu kitaba ulaşmayı engelleyerek, mevcut müze kütüphanesini zekice dönüştüren Kütüphane Projesi (2015). Proje, çoğu zaman tersi geçerliymiş gibi görünse de, aslında bilgiye ulaşmanın önündeki engeller ve toplumun özgürlüklerden mahrum bırakılmasıyla ilgilidir. Kamusal kurumlardaki sansüre ve bunu gizlemenin araçlarına gönderme yapar. Plastik cam levhalar, ziyaretçi ile kitaplar arasında saydam bir duvar yaratmakla birlikte kitaplara erişimi tamamen engellemez: Rechmaoui, kütüphanenin çeşitli yerlerine dağılmış olan altmış kitap seçmiştir ve ziyaretçiler, her bir kitabın sığabileceği kadar bırakılmış boşluklardan bu kitapları isterlerse hâlâ çıkarıp alabilirler. Kitapların arasında, Charles Baudelaire’in Modern Hayatın Ressamı (1863) ile Alain Badiou’nun Yüzyıl’ını (2005) ve Lobi’deki daimi projesi, şu an müzede geçici olarak Rechmaoui’ninkine komşu olan sanatçı Richard Wentworth üzerine bir kitabı bırakır.

Marwan Rechmaoui’nin Beyrut’un coğrafyasından ve tarihinden ilham alan heykel çalışması, kentleşme ve güncel toplumsal ve davranışsal demografi gibi temaları yansıtır. İstanbul Modern’de çeşitli malzemelerden yapılmış bir dizi yeni heykelin yanı sıra kütüphanede yeni bir çalışma sergiliyor. Bu heykeller, çimento, seramik çiniler ve metal bileşenleri, ama aynı zamanda –kent mimarisinin temel yapı unsuru– beton sütunlara gömülü meskûn binaların izleri gibi görünen dikmeler ve diğer maddeleri birleştirir. Sütunlar, bombalandığı halde ayakta kalmayı başarmış gibi görünen bir şehrin kulelerini bir araya getiriyor.

Books and Plexiglas panels
Born in Lebanon in 1964, Rechmaoui lives and works in Beirut. His sculptural work reflects themes of urbanisation and contemporary social and behavioural demographics. At Istanbul Modern, he presents two projects: a set of new sculptures of buildings and a Library Project (2015) that subtly alters the existing museum library by blocking access to most of the books with sheets of Plexiglas. The work concerns restricted access to knowledge and lack of freedom in society, even if the opposite often seems apparent. It refers to censorship within public institutions and the means of concealing it. The Plexiglas sheet creates a transparent barrier between the visitor and the books, but does not entirely limit their access: Rechmaoui has chosen sixty books, scattered throughout the library, that the visitors can still remove through openings just wide enough for each book. Among others, he leaves Charles Baudelaire’s The Painter of Modern Life (1863), Alain Badiou’s The Century (2005) and a book about artist Richard Wentworth, whose permanent project is in the Lobby.

Inspired by the geography and history of Beirut, Marwan Rechmaoui’s sculptural work reflects themes of urbanisation and contemporary social and behavioural demographics. At Istanbul Modern, he presents a new work in the library, as well as a series of new sculptures made from various materials. They incorporate cement, ceramic tiles and metal components, but also plants and other items that appear like traces of residential buildings embedded in concrete pillars – the basic structural element of urban architecture. The pillars gather like a city of towers and seem bombed-out, crumbled ruins; and yet they stand.
