İskenderiyeli sanatçı Wael Shawky 1971’de doğdu. Sanatçı film, çizim, fotoğraf, performans gibi çeşitli mecralar kullanarak Arap dünyasının gerçek ve hayali anlatılarını araştırır. İstanbul’da Shawky, Arapların bakış açısından Haçlı Seferleri’ni anlatan filmini içeren yeni yerleştirmesi Kerbela’nın Sırları’nı izleyiciye sunuyor. 12. yüzyılın sonunda geçen müzikal film, Shawky’nin Kabare Seferleri üçlemesinin sonuncusunu teşkil ediyor. Her biri birinci ağızdan hikâyelere dayanan filmler, döneme dair fikirlerine karşı çıkan sahneleriyle geleneksel medeniyet çatışması anlatısını karmaşıklaştırıyor. Fakat dehşetli ve ürkütücü konularına rağmen oyuncu yerine kuklanın kullanıldığı eserler gamsızlıklarını koruyor. Müslüman dünyada Sünni ve Şiiler arasındaki halen devam eden ayrıma yol açan başlıca katliam Kerbela Savaşı’ndan (680) kareler içeren ve Konstantinopolis’in Haçlılarca yağmalanışıyla biten Kerbela’nın Sırları film, performans ve öykücülük üzerinden milli, dini ve sanatsal kimlik kavramlarını alaşağı ediyor.

Alexandria-based artist Wael Shawky was born in 1971. He uses a variety of media such as film, drawing, photography, and performance to investigate the real and imaginary narratives of the Arab world. In Istanbul, Shawky presents his new installation, the Secrets of Karbala, his film about the Crusades from an Arab perspective. The musical film set at the end of the 12th century is the last in Shawky’s Cabaret Crusades trilogy, all of which is based on accounts from primary sources. These works complicate the traditional civilization clash narrative by including scenes that refute common notions of the era. Despite their violent and gruesome subject matter, however, the works maintain a certain light-heartedness by employing marionettes in lieu of actors. Including glimpses of the Battle of Karbala (680), the main massacre that led to the ongoing division between Sunni and Shia in the Muslim world and ending with the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders, the Secrets of Karbala tackles notions of national, religious and artistic identity through film, performance and storytelling.
