1976’da Jiangsu eyaletinde Changzhou’da doğan Liu Ding, Pekin’de yaşıyor. Ding, pratiklerinde sanat, sanat tarihi ve ideoloji arasındaki ilişkiyi soruşturur ve son yıllarda, Sosyalist Gerçekçilik ve bu akımın Çin’deki mevcut sanat pratiği ve söylemiyle ilişkisi üzerine kapsamlı bir araştırma yürütmektedir. Ding, sanat akademisinde Sovyet Gerçekçiliği üzerine eğitim almış olan yetenekli bir ressama yaptırdığı iki yeni tablo sergiliyor. Bu tablolar, Çin’deki farklı toplumsal gerçekçi sembolik heykellerin resimlerinden oluşan bir kolaj sunar ve bu heykeller malzeme ve tarz bakımından birörnek olmalarına rağmen, her bir heykeltıraşın tekil özellikleri yine de algılanabilmektedir. Ding ayrıca gerçekçi tarzda şiirler yazıyor ve onları bienal boyunca her gün İstanbul’daki otel odalarına bırakıyor.

Born in 1976, in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, Liu Ding is based in Beijing. Through his practice he investigates the relationship between art, art history and ideology, and over the last years he has carried out extensive research on Socialist Realism and its relationship with current art practice and discourse in China. Here he presents two new tableaux, which he commissioned from a skilled painter trained in Soviet Realism at the art academy. A collage of pictures of Social Realist figurative sculptures in China, they reveal the singular characters of the individual sculptors, despite the uniform subject matter of the works. Liu Ding also writes poems in a realist style, which can be found in Istanbul hotel rooms every day for the duration of the biennial.
