1981’de Çin'de, İç Moğolistan’da doğan Cheng Ran, Hangzhou’da yaşıyor ve çalışıyor. Ağırlıklı olarak video ve filmle uğraşan Ran, serbest çağrışım, anlam parçalanması ve öykülerden yararlanma tekniklerini bir araya getirerek, sinema, tiyatro ve şiiri esnek ama anlamlı bir tarzda birleştirir – çeşitli kültürler, toplumsal konumlar ve varoluşsal sorular hayli stilize bir skenografi içinde birlikte var olur. Cheng Ran, İstanbul’da, serginin açık olduğu her gün boyunca, tamamı sekiz saat süren son filmini gösteriyor. Çin Tibet’i, Doğu Çin Denizi ve Hollanda’nın yanı sıra kurgusal bir iç mekânda çekilen filmde, kayıp insanlar hakkındaki üç hikâye iç içe örülmüştür. Denizde kaybolan Hollandalı sanatçı Bas Jan Ader’den de esinlenen film, su, dalgalar, süre, film dili, felsefe ve sinemayı ele alır. Gündüz düşlerinde kaybolarak yüzeriz.

Born in 1981 in Inner Mongolia, China, Cheng Ran lives and works in Hangzhou. Working mainly with video and film, he combines cinema, theatre and poetry in a loose but significant manner, bringing together free association, fragmentation of meaning and the appropriation of stories. Various cultures, social positions and existential questions coexist in a highly stylised scenography. In Istanbul, Cheng presents a new film that lasts for the entire eight hours during which the exhibition is open each day. Shot in China’s Tibet, East Sea, and in the Netherlands, as well as in a fictional indoor set, the film interweaves three stories concerning missing people. Also inspired by the story of Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader – lost at sea – the film concerns water, waves, duration, the language of film, philosophy and motion pictures. Lost in reverie, we float.
