Fahrelnissa Zeid (d. 1901, Büyükada – ö. 1991, Amman) diplomat, aydın ve sanatçılardan oluşan seçkin bir Osmanlı ailesine doğdu. İstanbul’daki Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nde okuyan ilk kadınlardan biriydi ve mezun olduktan sonra Paris’teki Académie Ranson’da çalışmalarını sürdürdü. Fovizm ve dışavurumculuğun öğelerini birleştiren soyut bir resim stili geliştirdi. Zeid İstanbul’a döndüğünde D Grubu adında genç bir sanatçı çevresiyle ilişkilendi. 1950’de New York’taki Hugo Gallery'de yapılan, ses getiren ilk sergisinden sonra dünyanın değişik yerlerinde elliden fazla sergide yer aldı. Eşini 1975’te kaybettikten sonra Amman’a taşınan sanatçı buradaki Kraliyet Sanat Enstitüsü’nde ders verdi ve Fahrelnissa Zeid Sanat Enstitüsü’nü kurdu.

Fahrelnissa Zeid (b. 1901, Büyükada – d. 1991, Amman) was born into a distinguished Ottoman family of diplomats, intellectuals and artists. She was one of the first women to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul and after graduation she travelled to Paris to continue her studies at the Académie Ranson. She developed an abstract painting style incorporating elements of Fauvism and Expressionism. When Zeid returned to Istanbul, she associated herself with a circle of young Turkish artists known as the D Group. Her exhibition at the Hugo Gallery in New York (1950) is considered her début, after which she participated in approximately fifty exhibitions around the world. Following her husband’s death in 1975, she moved to Amman, Jordan where she taught at the Royal Art Institute and established the Fahrelnissa Zeid Institute of Fine Arts.
