Juan A. de Carlos 1986 yılında Madrid'deki Autonoma Üniversitesi'nde nörobiyoloji doktorasını tamamladı. Washington Üniversitesi, St. Louis ve Profesör Dennis O´Leary'nin yanında The Salk Institute, La Jolla'daki doktora sonrası çalışmalarının ardından Madrid'deki Instituto Cajal'da Staff öğretim üyeliğine atandı. Halen bu kurumda başta beyin zarı ve koku alma korteksi olmak üzere telensefalik yapıların gelişimini düzenleyen temel mekanizmaları aydınlatmakla ilgilenen bir araştırma grubunu yönetmektedir. Bu çalışmaların önemi, hücre göçlerinin aksatılmasının zekâ geriliği, otizm ve şizofreni gibi önemli hastalıkların altında yatabileceğinin keşfidir.
Juan A. de Carlos received his PhD in Neurobiology from the University Autonoma of Madrid in 1986. After post-doctoral training at the Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. and The Salk Institute in La Jolla, Ca. with Prof. Dennis O´Leary, he was appointed as Staff scientist at the Instituto Cajal in Madrid. In this institution he leads a research group interested in elucidating fundamental mechanisms that regulate development of telencephalic structures, focusing on the cerebral mantle and the olfactory cortex. The importance of these studies is the discovery that disruptions of cell migrations underlie important disorders, such as mental retardation, autism or schizophrenia, to say a few.
