Theaster Gates (b. 1973, Chicago) lives and works in Chicago. Gates is an artist and innovator who combines strategies of urban planning, object making and performance. Gates is recognised for his work on the South Side of Chicago, including Dorchester Projects and Black Cinema House, and is the founder of the non-profit Rebuild Foundation and the Arts Incubator in Washington Park. In his past and ongoing projects, Gates helps define the future of artistic place-based efforts, in research and practice. Gates has exhibited and performed at sites including the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Punta della Dogana, Venice; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel.
