1933’te Biella’da doğan sanatçı, altmışlı yılların ortasında Arte Povera hareketinin önde gelen figürlerinden biri oldu. Bugün ise toplumsal ve çevresel değişim ile sanatsal deneyim meselesiyle ilgilenen Cittadellarte adlı dinamik bir vakfı ve misafir sanatçı programını yürütmektedir. İzleyiciyi sanat eserine dâhil edebilmek için yansıtıcı boyayla kaplı tuvaller üzerine yaptığı ayna resimlerini 1960’ların başında sergilemeye başladı. Sonraları bu tuvallerin yerini parlatılmış çelik aldı ve ona bugünkü ününü kazandıran, izleyicileri ve dünyayı sürekli bir akıştan ibaret sonsuz bir kolektif ve toplumsal uzama dâhil eden ayna resimlerini üretmeye başladı. Venere degli Stracci (Paçavraların Venüs’ü) adlı eserini 1967’de yarattı. Alçı bir Venüs heykelini capcanlı bir paçavra yığınıyla birleştirdi, böylece yüksek sanat sıradan yaşama girdi, bir enerjiler yığını kolektif olarak paylaşıldı ve kaynaştırıldı. Bu yükselen paçavra yığını, Pellizza da Volpedo’nun tablosundaki, yükselmekte olan Mayıs 68 hareketindeki kalabalıkla bir paralellik oluşturuyordu. Pistoletto’ya göre, kutsal metinlerde anlatılan masumiyet cennetinden kovuluşumuzdan sonra, insan eliyle ikinci bir cennet, insan merkezli uygarlıklar ve kültürler yarattık. Onca çevre felaketinin gazabına uğradıktan sonra, şimdi üçüncü bir cennete açık olmalıyız, sorumlu doğa-kültürlerin bu gezegen üzerindeki bir cennetine.

Born in 1933 in Biella, Italy, Pistoletto emerged as a key figure of the Arte Povera movement in the mid-1960s and today runs the dynamic foundation and residency programme Cittadellarte, which addresses issues of social and environmental change and artistic experience. He began to exhibit his mirror paintings in the early 1960s – canvases covered with reflective paint in order to include the viewer in the artwork. He then replaced the canvas completely with polished steel, beginning to produce the mirror paintings for which he is renowned, incorporating spectators and the world into an infinite collective and social space of constant flux. Pistoletto created his Venere degli Stracci (Venus of the Rags) in 1967. He combined a plaster cast of Venus with a vibrant pile of rags so that high art would enter ordinary life and their energies would be collectively shared and combined. The rags embody an arising crowd parallel to that of Pellizza da Volpedo, the crowd of the emergent May ’68 movement. According to Pistoletto, after the expulsion from Paradise narrated in holy texts, we created a second, artificial paradise, our anthropocentric civilisations and cultures. Now, shipwrecked in environmental catastrophes, we must be open to a third paradise, a planetary one, of responsible nature-cultures.
